Events

MusicTank events feature top-drawer speakers and attract a rich and dynamic cross-industry audience; open to all, they also afford excellent networking opportunities. Think Tanks are pitched at mid-level and assume a level of knowledge concerning the music industry in general, if not the subject matter itself.

Millennials & The Social Media Explosion

This MusicTank session will lift the lid on the social media phenomenon and reveal how rights holders can better engage with this social space and make sense of its increasingly complex future. Beginning with a presentation from artist, composer and serial social media experimenter Steve Lawson, this event will also update on progress of our chosen Millennials artist James Yuill, twelve-months on from MusicTank’s Millennials conference at which Terry McBride spearheaded a unique 360-degree artist road-map assisted by the amassed 180-strong conference audience. Closing this event will be a 90-minute debate looking at the future of social media in an attempt to gauge where it’s heading and its impact on rights holders, with a panel comprising far-sighted entrepreneurs, commentators and digital culture experts.

Can The Music Industry Afford To Go Green?

Launching at MusicTank's think tank debate on sustainability, environmental coalition Julie's Bicycle will unveil a unique initiative providing grants to help music companies with carbon audits, training and tools for sustainable energy management. Many music organisations have made great strides in cleaning up their acts but, as we lumber through this recession, how many green initiatives will be sidelined by cost cutting measures? Many will argue that we can’t afford to go green, not just yet at any rate. This evening’s debate will sort fact from fiction and examine what sustainability measures are financially sustainable at this point in time.

Let’s Sell Recorded Music! Part 4: 'Squaring The Circle'

The fourth and last of the series, this think tank will draw together conclusions from the series and scope possible areas for consultation, research and development. It will also consider the main issue to surface throughout this discussion strand: at the heart of the future of digital music sales, does the future lie in licensing proprietary, closed music services or open systems that somehow utilise P2P?

Let’s Sell Recorded Music! Part1: 'Here We Are Now, Entertain Us'

Since Napster first reared its head in the late nineties, the recorded music business has tried in vain to put the genie back in the bottle. The result - some pr blunders and an estimated 20:1 illegal/legal download rate. This series of think tanks will focus on effective legitimate P2P alternatives and over the course of four events will review what people want, where technology is heading, what the most plausible new models are and how they might be licensed. Kicking off the series, we take a long hard look at what music consumers actually want and how this tallies with the status quo and raft of new services in various stages of development or launch.
