David Smith - Lateral Artist Management Ltd

Started out as a musician in 1984. First band nearly signed to EMI in 1985. At same time, he roadied and was sound engineer for the band that went on to become Jesus Jones.

Spent a few years in various dodgy funk/rock bands, before building own home studio. After a couple of years, started own techno label, using a P&D deal. Released two very well received singles but went under because both distributors used went bust owing him money.

Formed a management company at beginning of 2000. First band he managed was Ruby Cruiser – signed to Elemental/One Little Indian & Geffen in USA. Their album, ‘Twelve Short Stories’, was a critical if not commercial success, especially as the record label dropped them a week before its releaseā€¦ Spent the next year or so trying to get a deal, which for UK rock bands at the time, were pretty much non-existent.

Then went on to manage Dynamo Dresden. “New Gods of Loungecore”, proclaimed the Radio 1 Evening Session. They won best up and coming act at the Welsh Music Awards 2002. Completed remixes of Annie Lennox, Rob Dougan, Peppercorn, UK Sweet from Japan and remixed for labels such as BMG and Parlophone. (Although they did turn down Whitney Houston!)

They made Hit Sheet magazine / CD single of the week, played a showcase for ASCAP and eventually signed to the resolutely independent Madamusic label. Single due for release in February 2004.

Currently managing a 5 piece rock band called Joski. They’ve supported InMe, THISgirl, Days of Worth and The Kennedy Soundtrack. Their debut single Chorus was released through Copro/Casket in July 2003. At its height the Joski website (www.joski.co.uk) receives around 160,000 hits a month and has approximately 3000 MP3 downloads a month. They also have a very active e-team of nearly 200 people and a mailing list of well over 1000.

In the New Year he assumes the day to day running of another management company in addition to my own and will be looking after a girl group called TNT, Hollywood actress Erika Christensen and certain aspects of Jason Donovan’s musical career.
