Gary McClarnan - Founder, Sparklestreet

Gary McClarnan is a serial entrepreneur who started out studying Engineering, Technology and Design in the early 1980’s.  He then moved on to photography, working on journalistic projects and large format camera work for advertising studios.  He contributed to the definitive Hacienda book, ‘The Hacienda Must Be Built’, whilst working as the venue’s in-house photographer and then joined the team at Mixmag, taking it from dj fanzine to leading club culture glossy.  Alongside this, cutting his teeth as club promoter and artist manager, he turned a failing rock venue in Stoke, Shelley’s, into a leading dance venue and took DJ Sasha from bedroom dj to national icon.

In 1992 he went to University to study business and finance.  Then, in 1995, Gary started an artist management and event production company in Manchester and discovered dj Mr Scruff, who is still a client.  Gary helped Mr Scruff reach international fame with music featuring in international ad campaigns, selling over 1m records, producing hundreds of successful lines of merchandise and establishing a national tea brand.

In 1997 Gary joined the board of the Music Mangers Forum, later becoming ‘Head of New Strategies’ (1999), and contributed to the development of Mpeg4 and Mpeg7.  He is still on the board, and continues to advise software companies on fanbase dynamics, artist merchandising and touring logistics.

Gary is currently CEO of Sparklestreet Projects, the company he formed to span his music client and brand projects.  Sparklestreet is a special projects company delivering events, experiential and strategic marketing consultancy for corporate brands and music clients.  Sparklestreet clients include adidas, ITV, Pernod Ricard, BBC, Vauxhall Motors and several other leading brands.
