James Ware– Lawyer, James Ware LLP
Educated at St Johns College, Oxford – BA ( Jurisprudence) – he q ualified as a Solicitor, with Honours, in 1972 after training in articles with the City firm of Biddle & Co.
After initial legal experience in banking and international tax planning, he left the City to specialize in copyright law and the entertainment industry, entering into private practice initially on his own and then in partnership with James Saunders. Clients included Virgin Records, Rough Trade Records, Marc Bolan, Joe Strummer and the 1O1ers (The Clash), Aswad and a variety of other players in the music industry at the time.
In 1979 joined Virgin Records as a director and set up the legal and business affairs department for the Virgin Group.
Joined CBS as Managing Director of their UK Music Publishing Division in 1981, he later became the regional Vice President of CBS Inc with responsibility for CBS’s European Music Publishing Operations.
In 1986 James joined Davenport Lyons as a partner. He remained with Davenport Lyons for some 18 years, creating a new music department out of the old and making a major contribution to Davenport Lyons’ growth in the entertainment sector and related areas of information technology, including computer software, e-commerce and the internet.
James remains a consultant of Davenport Lyons in his specialist areas of practice and works closely with the firm in areas of mutual interest.
January 2005 saw him set up his own new firm in the form of a limited liability partnership, James Ware LLP. The firm’s principal speciality is copyright and the protection and exploitation of intellectual property rights and ideas.
The practice includes music and literary publishing, musicals and other theatrical promotions, independent record companies and producers, specialist rights in the security industries, photographic images, a wide range of performing artists, authors, composers, agents and managers, broadcasters and television production companies, software companies, theatrical entrepreneurs and producers.
Musical clients include bands and performers across a wide range of genres from Deep Purple and Madness to classical composers and performers. The practice also includes Copyright Tribunal related work. James works closely with colleagues specialized in the television and film industries.
James remains extensively involved in advising corporate and private clients on the management and administration of their business affairs and the protection and handling of private assets and income.
Whilst at CBS, James was a member of the Council of the Mechanical Rights Society and Chairman of its Audit Committee. He was also a member of the Popular Publishers Committee of the Music Publishers Association.
He is Deputy Chairman of the GSA Conservatoire and a member of the Council of Brent Community Law Centre. He has held a variety of other charitable and commercial appointments and currently also holds a number of commercial directorships.
