John Broomhall - Audio Director & Consultant

John Broomhall is an independent Audio Director & Consultant with eleven years’ experience in games, a number of senior management roles with major videogame publishers (MicroProse, Spectrum Holobyte, Hasbro Interactive, Infogrames) under his belt, and over fifty published titles to his credit.

As an accomplished musician and composer with ten years’ work in recording behind him, Broomhall originally joined MicroProse to write game scores.

Quickly recognising the importance of music, sound design and audio technology in videogames he began to champion the cause of an often-overlooked component of videogames within the industry.

He subsequently went on to head up soundtrack production, directing the business, creative, and technical aspects of audio on a diverse range of titles concurrently developed by both in-house and external development teams, managing in-house sound designers and commissioning a string of game scores.

His career, which also includes working as a game producer, encompasses many global hit titles such as the hugely successful X-COM series; Geoff Crammond’s acclaimed Grand Prix simulations; Chris Sawyer’s Transport Tycoon; Sid Meier’s Civilization/Colonization; Gunship 2000; MechWarrior 3; and B17 Flying Fortress 1 & 2.

Broomhall has chaired several BAFTA Interactive Audio Awards and events covering sound in games over the last four years (TIGA’s Sounds Investment, BAFTA’s Sounding Off 1 & 2), and regularly speaks on game audio at seminars and university lectures (Leeds Film Festival, The School Of Sound, Bath Spa University, Bournemouth Media School, Hull University).

He sits on the steering committee of the Edinburgh International Games Festival and produced the Music Masterclass at this year’s inaugural event featuring Harry Gregson-Williams, Prof. Stephen Deutsch, James Hannigan and Barrington Pheloung.

He writes a monthly column for the well-known industry magazine Develop, consults to a number of publisher/developer clients, and is currently Audio Manager for the much anticipated official videogame of Pop Idol/American Idol, due for release later this year.
