Developed in 2006 at Harvard, Noank Media Inc. is a U.S-based technology company that enables copyright holders to monetise P2P distribution on a global basis.
Noank’s core business model is simple: Obtain non-exclusive download licenses from digital media content owners (musical recordings, films, educational materials, photographs, etc.); issue blanket sub-licenses covering this content to networks (ISPs, university networks, social networks, mobile phone providers, etc.), who in turn pay Noank per-subscriber usage fees. Using proprietary technology, Noank counts the frequency with which the subscribers of participating networks watch or listen to each recording on their home computers or portable devices. Noank uses the aggregated data to distribute the bulk of the usage fees among the copyright owners.
