Julia Payne - Director, The Hub
Julia has 20+years experience in promoting, marketing and fundraising for independent ‘beyond mainstream’ music. Julia earned her stripes working in a number of venues, including London’s Barbican Centre, as development director at a music charity and then as an artist manager and producer.
After a spell as music officer at Arts Council England, in 2002, she co-founded the hub, curious to explore a new development agency model in the music sector. Essentially a social enterprise, the hub part-subsidises its own in-house music projects through consultancy, training and research work.
This autumn she is heading up the hub’s new Joining the Dots project, which will explore new potentially ‘game-changing’ ideas for the independent music sector, and provide new opportunities for those in the sector to meet, collaborate and share knowledge with each other. Clients and partners Julia has worked with at the hub include AIM, BBC Talent, the Musicians’ Union, PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England, as well as hundreds of individual artists and small businesses working in the indie sector.
Julia is Chair of Sound Exchange and on the board of the National Youth Jazz Collective, and an advisor for PRS for Music Foundation.
